‘Sundial’ a poem by Val Parks

I built a sundial
in my garden
and carefully
marked the noon.
I watched the shadow
lengthen
as it traveled
in an arc,
watched until
it could not
count the hours
of the night.

I, bereft
and purposeless,
was lost in timeless
night.
And still I watched
for morning
and the light
to shine upon
my artistry.
Morning dawned
sunless,
and black clouds
filled the sky.
